A ProSport Therapist Reveals: When To Not Call A Physio

The first thing that may go through someone’s mind when they suffer an injury or struggle with pain is… ‘who do I need to contact first?’

Now, this can be a tough decision to make if you are not sure why you are getting pain or what the injury may be.

We often see patients that have tried other routes first and they have not helped…

But in some cases we see patients that do not need physio first and instead require another health care practitioner.

Here at ProSport we care about you, so if physiotherapy is not the right course of treatment for you, we will point you in the right direction.

So, here is a bit of a guide to make the decision making process easier for you when the pain is too much to handle.

A ProSport Therapist Reveals: When To Not Call A Physio

When Your Pain Is A Sign Of Something That Could Be Serious

Firstly, it is always important to rule out anything that could be something more sinister that requires immediate medical attention.

The body is a complex system. Most symptoms can be similar between different conditions, so try not to worry if you think it could be something more serious.

Here are some of the symptoms to look out for:

  • Severe pain
  • Worsening pain or constant pain
  • Stabbing night pain that wakes you from your sleep
  • Significant unexplained weight loss
  • Significant trauma – For example, a sports injury where you have been tackled or unable to weight bear through a joint
  • Pins and needles in both legs
  • Numbness in both legs
  • Significant loss of strength in both limbs
  • Inability to pass urine
  • Inability to feel when going to the toilet around your genital area
  • Loss of control when passing stools.

If you have anything that you think might be a sign of something more sinister please call 111 or speak to your G.P.

Are You Motivated Enough To See Results?

At Prosport we want to put a stop to your pain and get you back doing the things important to you whilst preventing the pain from coming back.

We understand that this requires more time and commitment to a plan.

ROME wasn’t built in a day…

You are changing the way you move on a daily basis, we only treat people that are motivated and committed to getting the results that they want.

If your injury is not important enough and you aren’t sure how the pain is affecting your life then now is not the right time to call a physio…

We have found the most committed patients are those that have been around the houses, they have tried everything but nothing has worked.
They are affected emotionally and physically by their injury and have a clear and achievable end goal in mind. Of course, this effect can be small or a large impact and does range from person to person.

The people more motivated and committed to the plan see better results.

Physiotherapy is a profession that helps millions of people each year to recover and rehabilitate from injury. Patients with more serious injuries should always seek urgent medical help first.

Are You Looking For A Quick Fix?

Did you know that physiotherapists are not magicians? ……

There is no such thing as a quick fix, if you have come to physio with pain… it may be a result of bad movement habits picked up over several years.

Please don’t expect your pain/problem to be resolved in 1-2 sessions, as you will be very disappointed in the end result.

At ProSport we pride ourselves on our ability to clear pain and stop it from coming back long term…

So, if you are looking for this quick fix then maybe ProSport isn’t the place for you….

Understand that you may be able to manage the surface level symptoms right now, but it WILL only be a matter of time before the deeper problem makes a comeback

How A Physio CAN Help

I’ve talked a lot about when NOT to call a physio but there is a lot a physio CAN do.

In an assessment we will identify tissues that are not happy to lengthen therefore restricting your movement and causing you pain. We will also identify areas that are not happy tolerating as much load as others.

We will plan out a rehab programme, specific to the movements that you do every day, for example running, climbing stairs, sitting at a desk etc.

We will suggest a number of sessions so that you have an idea of how long this process will take for you to get from where you are now to where you want to be.

Your therapist will provide hands on treatment and prescribe exercises… that allow you to move efficiently without those nasty flare ups.
